Sketchbook - Alleyway by fnook Sketchbook - Alleyway by fnook
I was going through some of my older designs and found a few that I haven't posted to DA. This one here, is something of a speed-sketch. At the time, I was waiting for some phone-in animation approvals, and I had a huge pile of the worst quality animation paper on the planet sitting on a shelf. So I decided to see how many compositions/characters I could wing out before the phone rang with the approvals I was waiting for. This one was done in about 6 minutes, and I personally think it's one of the better ones of the bunch that I did.

I'm a strong believer in the concept that your FIRST idea is often the BEST idea, hence I do a lot of gesture drawings, and sketching as fast as possible.

Thanks so much. Yeah as I said in the description, it was a bit of an experiment to see how many characters/layouts I could whip off before the phone rang.

Thanks.. I plan on eventually revisiting this one some day. It turned out rather well for being a "challenge myself" piece.

Sweet work, from the pencil work to the expressions, this is great.
I do believe it's better to do pencils than inks to make something that look more spontaneous and living. :D

I love your work, and this piece really stood out for me. Such incredible composition, emotion and storytelling in one sketch! Just fantastic work, man. I'll be watching your work, in the least stalker-ish way possible!

Hahahah... Thanks dude.. That ALMOST didn't sound creepy at all. *kidding!* ^_~
Glad you've been enjoying my stuff. I've been trying to make time to post more. Studio work has been keeping me alarmingly busy, but I do manage to make time now and then for posting on dA.

All that in only six minutes? I know animators have to get used to working fast because their animations tend to have lots of frames in them... but this is still pretty dang impressive!

That's so cute!~ And for the short amount of time put into it I have to say that it's really fluid. Good proportions, movement. I really think that this would be a really neat scene if you were to flesh it out. ^^

Thanks so much! Yeah, I strongly believe that the longer I spend mulling over an angle, pose, composition, etc, the worse the whole thing becomes. I've trained myself to try to get a whole idea down as quickly as humanly possible to try to retain as much of the original inspiration as I can, before I end up spoiling it with overthinking. Hehehe.. ^_^

Best drawing advice ever, except for when my original inspiration already sucks X\  I ruin a lot of good ideas because I strain about them. It takes longer, and I get less practice.

Good angle, with nice kinetics. That's not a word, but... yeah, really good movement and expression. :D

Thanks! yeah, I like to try to really challenge myself sometimes. Especially when I have a break from my animation quota. Deadlines are tight in the studio, and constantly drawing the same characters all the time and having little time for anything else, can really make you feel like your skills are dulling over time. Little challenges like these help me feel like I'm keeping my skillz sharpish..
